Dating back as far as Julius Caesar, hair loss and hair loss treatments have been on the forefront of men and women’s minds. Although hair loss is generally associated with the onset of old age and is seen as an inevitable end of youth, for many the progression of hair loss begins in their 20’s. Since hair loss is so shocking and affects so many, hair loss treatments have become big business.
Although there is currently no cure for baldness there are hair loss treatments, both surgical and drug oriented, that can help slow down the process while attempting to hide the actual hair loss. There are two drugs on the market today that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. They are Finasteride and Minoxidil. Both drugs work to control the body’s production of DHT (dihydrotesterone). This is the cause of male pattern baldness. Although side effects are uncommon, they are possible and you should check with your doctor before taking either of these medications.
Although there are only two drugs that have received the FDA’s approval for hair loss treatments, there are many herbal supplements that claim to stop or reverse hair loss. Many of these supplements contain herbs and minerals that can indeed help to stop the production of DHT, but not necessarily in the combination and strength that is needed and they all have side effects too. If you decide to take this route, be careful. The advertising may say safe and guaranteed to work, but that isn’t always true. Many of these companies word their ads such that they are covered if it fails to work for everyone, regardless of what they appear to claim in their advertisement. As with any medication, it is important to check with your doctor before trying any of these types of supplements.
Surgical intervention is another option available for hair loss treatment and there are several types. The most common of these procedures is a hair transplant, more often referred to as “plugs”. Although in its infancy the plugs were quite unnatural looking and easy to spot, with advances in medical technology hair transplants now look and feel more like a normal head of hair. Another option is tissue expansion. Tiny balloons are inserted in the scalp in areas between dense hair sections. Over the course of several months, the balloons are inflated expanding the scalp by one third. This extra skin is removed and the sides are pulled up over the exposed scalp along with the hair covering that section of scalp. Scalp reduction, another surgical procedure, is similar to a face-lift. Loose skin on the scalp is removed and the sides are pulled up to replace it.
If you are interested in hair loss treatments, check with your doctor first to determine the cause of your hair loss and then decide what hair loss treatments would work best for you. As you can see, you will have a variety of options.
