Hair Transplant Cost

Hair Transplant Cost – How much will it take?

Since hair transplants first hit the medical scene in the mid-twentieth century, they have been a hot commodity. Since approximately 40% of males suffer from male pattern baldness, hair transplants are one of the more popular choices in cosmetic surgery. Although initial results were less than natural-looking, to say the least, with time and advances in medical technology, hair transplants can now be performed that leave you with a natural-looking, full head of hair. Although this sounds terrific, there are some drawbacks, namely the hair transplant cost. Hair transplants are surgical procedures done by a board-certified doctor and the hair transplant cost usually reflects just that. Often hair transplant cost is the only deciding factor in choosing a surgeon, but to get the right procedure for you, it may take more than just a good price.

How is Hair Transpant Cost determined?

Hair transplant cost is not cut and dried. There is no one set price and the cost can vary greatly. The cost to transplant hair can depend on things like location, the doctor performing the procedure, the technique the hair transplant doctor uses, and the difficulty of the case. Some doctors price the procedure on the overall size of the area to be covered while others price the procedure on the amount of hair transplant grafts needed to cover the specified area. In 2020, The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery found the average price of a hair transplant procedure in the United States was $5,184. This fee, however, only reflects the cost of the transplantation surgeon. Other additional fees, such as anesthesia, operating room use, and other related expenses were not factored into this dollar amount and can greatly add to the overall hair transplant cost. Hair transplant costs can be expensive, but the costs of transplants are usually less in the long run than other hair loss treatments. Treatments like Propecia and Rogaine must be taken over and over again, which will greatly increase their costs. Hair transplant surgery is permanent, making the higher price actually a better deal.

Since hair transplants are considered to be cosmetic in nature, most health insurance policies do not cover hair transplant costs. However, many doctors will provide their patients the opportunity to take advantage of a payment plan over the course of several years rather than paying the full amount of hair transplant costs upfront. There are also medical loans available to help offset hair transplant costs. This can be a real advantage for those individuals who cannot afford to pay in one lump sum but would still like to have the transplant.

Surgical intervention is another option available for hair loss treatment and there are several types. The most common of these procedures is a hair transplant, more often referred to as “plugs”. Although in its infancy the plugs were quite unnatural looking and easy to spot, with advances in medical technology hair transplants now look and feel more like a normal head of hair. Another option is tissue expansion. Tiny balloons are inserted in the scalp in areas between dense hair sections. Over the course of several months, the balloons are inflated expanding the scalp by one third. This extra skin is removed and the sides are pulled up over the exposed scalp along with the hair covering that section of scalp. Scalp reduction, another surgical procedure, is similar to a face-lift. Loose skin on the scalp is removed and the sides are pulled up to replace it.

Is a low Hair Transplant Cost a good thing?

Like with most surgical cosmetic procedures, many doctors will advertise a low hair transplant cost as an incentive to attract patients. Do not be fooled into thinking that low cost and quality go hand in hand. Although some hair transplant doctors may be well qualified to successfully perform hair transplants, others are not, and offering low prices is their way of compensating for that. Before you have any procedure done, be sure to do some research and check out the hair loss surgeon in question. Any surgeon you choose should be a board-certified member of the American Board of Medical Specialties. Any reputable surgeon will have available to you a detailed profile listing accomplishments and training they have had in the hair transplant area of medicine. Also, ask to see some of their work or even speak with previous customers. This will give you a better idea of just what the surgeon is capable of doing and not just what his hair transplant prices are. If you don’t like what you see or hear, move on to a different doctor. Do not let hair transplant cost be the deciding factor in your decision.
