Hair loss treatments for men have grown throughout the years. Some of the most popular treatments for men now include Propecia, Rogaine®, and hair transplant surgery. Approximately 95 percent of all males who suffer from male pattern baldness do so for genetic reasons. This type of hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia. This term comes from “andro” hormones such as testosterone and dihydrotestosterone, “genetic” inherited trait, and alopecia – which means hair loss.
Until the 2000s, scientists could not pinpoint the exact cause of androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness, which made treating baldness in men difficult. Since then, researchers have discovered that hair follicles which produce an enzyme called 5 alpha-reductase and combined with testosterone, produce dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT “attacks” the hair follicles, slowly breaking them down until the hair follicle falls out. Hair loss treatments in men can stop the production of DHT and help regrow hair.
The hair follicles most sensitive to DHT in males are the temporal, frontal, vertex, and crown. Hair on the sides of the head and back are NOT sensitive to DHT, this is why treatments like hair transplantation can use these as donor’s hairs. Male pattern baldness usually begins in the temporal regions and affects 96 percent of all mature caucasian men whether or not they are going to have typical male pattern baldness. Treatment results though vary for everyone.
It is generally recognized that men in their 20s have a 20 percent incidence of MPHL, in their 30s, a 30 percent incidence of MPHL, in their 40s, a 40 percent incidence of MPLH, and so on.
Androgenetic alopecia is the cause of hair loss in 95 percent of men, knowing this can make finding the right hair loss treatment even easier. The other 5 percent could be affected by:
Alopecia Areata: Hair loss that occurs in patches on the scalp. Thought to be caused by an autoimmune disorder. Treatment can be difficult.
Alopecia Totalis: Hair loss that occurs over the entire scalp.
Alopecia Universalis: Hair loss that occurs over the entire body.
Traction Alopecia: This refers to hair loss that occurs due to traction placed on the hair. Braids, ponytails, and other hairstyles that induce traction on the scalp are common causes of traction alopecia. Treatment can be as simple as a change of hairstyle.
Anagen Effluvium: Generally due to internally administered medications, such as chemotherapy agents, that poison the growing hair follicle. Treatment can consist of switching medications.
